Fixed braces

Fixed braces are the original orthodontic method, but treatments have come a long way. Modern braces are more discreet, more comfortable and more efficient than ever.

How do fixed braces work?

Fixed braces use a series of brackets, archwires and elastics to guide your smile into alignment. A small bracket will be attached to each individual tooth, with a metal archwire passing through them to connect them. Small elastics hold everything in place.

To progress through treatment, you will visit our practice for regular adjustment appointments. At your appointment, your Specialist Orthodontist will make bends in your archwires to apply gentle, targeted pressure. This will move your teeth into their optimal positions over time.

Types of fixed braces

At Guildford Orthodontics, we offer four types of fixed braces: traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, self-ligating braces and lingual braces.

Metal braces

Metal braces are the tried-and-true smile solution. They use small, stainless-steel brackets that are very efficient and durable. Metal braces are the most budget-friendly brace option, and are the treatment we use for our NHS patients.

Types of fixed braces

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces have brackets made of clear ceramic instead of metal. This helps your braces blend in nicely with the colour of your smile. We can even give you a white archwire to make your treatment more discreet.

Damon self-ligating braces

Damon self-ligating braces don’t require any elastics to hold your archwire in place. Instead, each bracket has a built-in slide mechanism that allows your archwire to easily glide through them during treatment.

Because Damon braces self-adjust, you won’t need to see us for as many adjustment appointments. You also won’t experience as much friction, making Damon braces more efficient and comfortable than traditional braces. Best yet, they even come in a clear option!

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are hidden completely from view on the back side of your teeth. This makes them a great option for parents, client-facing professionals, and self-conscious teens. No one needs to know about your treatment!
